Artist Statement

As a ceramic artist, creating textured surfaces is fundamental in my work; I enjoy introducing a range of materials into the clay body and experimenting with the results. Through working with the medium of clay, I explore the material's diversity and qualities, which challenge me to develop new skills and concepts.

My sculptures are inspired by coastal and inland environment; I am heavily influenced by earthy, textured forms. I also utilise the natural environment, taking impressions from its unique figure print.

I want to steer away from the perfect pretence of traditional clay objects. I feel that nature's random form is perfect in its non-polished fashion. By giving the material no restrictions, it leads itself to me in a rugged, raw state. Cracks and flaws in the work are what I hope will intrigue the viewer and bring them to appreciate its context.
